What is the Strings & Jazzy Things camp?
Strings & Jazzy Things Music Camp is a tuition-free camp for young musicians ages 10-15 who have participated in their school music program for at least 2 years. The camp is presented by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis. It is an annual camp that began in 1998???
Is Strings & Jazzy Things Camp only for String players?
No, Strings & Jazzy Things provides instructors and challenging playing opportunities for woodwinds, brass, and percussion students.
Do I need to audition to participate in Strings & Jazzy Things?
All campers must be age 10-15 at the time of the camp with at least 2 years experience on their instrument. Band instrument players are assigned to the BLUE ensemble without auditions. String players are assigned to the GREEN orchestra by default with no audition required. More experienced string players may audition for the RED orchestra Only string students who wish to play in the RED orchestra need to audition. There is a place on the registration sign up to indicate if you wish to audition.
If I played in the RED orchestra in last year, do I need to audition again this year?
Wear comfortable school-appropriate clothing and closed toed shoes as students get opportunities to go outside for recreation.
No, if you were in the RED orchestra previously, you will automatically be assigned to RED again this year.
What should I wear to camp?
What do I wear for the final concert recording?
You will receive your camp T-shirt Friday before the recording. Wear jeans or pants, no sweat pants or tights.
Do I need to bring my lunch?
No. Lunch and snacks will be provided, There is a place on the registration to indicate any allergies that impact your food choices. If you have special issues, please contact the staff prior to camp so we can make arrangements.
Can I leave camp for doctors’ appointments or other obligations?
We highly discourage scheduling appointments during camp. An ensemble is a team and everyone’s contribution is important. Early dismissals disrupt your learning as well as the progress of your ensemble. We ask in the registration that you commit to being present on Friday for the recording of the final concert.
What does "Tuition-free" mean?
The costs of facilities, staff, and instruction resources are underwritten by our generous sponsors, donors and foundation supporters at no cost to any camper. We do have a registration fee is charged to cover the cost of meals and T-shirt. A limited number of scholarships are available in cases of financial need.
